National Taiwan University Guide for International Students

National Taiwan University, known as NTU, is Taiwan's leading comprehensive research university. It was founded in 1928 as Taihoku Imperial University and received its present name in 1945.

NTU announced that it ranked 54th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, released in June 2026. That is a useful indicator of research and reputation, but a ranking does not tell you whether a particular department, curriculum, language of instruction, cost, or supervisor fits your goals.

Academic choice comes before ranking

NTU offers undergraduate, master's, and doctoral study across a broad range of colleges and institutes. International applicants should compare the exact program rather than treating the university as one admissions category.

Check:

  • degree level and program length
  • curriculum and required courses
  • teaching and assessment language
  • department-specific documents
  • faculty or research fit
  • tuition and credit fees
  • scholarship conditions
  • application and result dates for the intended entry term

The official admissions system publishes available programs, quotas, and requirements. Those current program rules should override general advice in a blog.

Can you study at NTU in English?

NTU offers English-taught programs and individual courses, but availability varies by degree, department, and semester. It is inaccurate to assume that every named master's program is entirely in English or that every doctoral adviser will supervise in English.

Use NTU's current program listing to confirm whether the full degree can be completed in English. For individual modules, the Office of International Affairs directs students to the NTU Course Information System, which can filter courses conducted in English.

Language requirements are also program-specific. There is no universal NTU rule that every English-taught applicant needs TOEFL iBT 79 or IELTS 6.0. Confirm the accepted tests, minimum scores, exemptions, and validity period for the exact department.

Who applies as an international student?

NTU separates applicants into categories including international students, overseas Chinese students, Hong Kong and Macao students, and mainland Chinese students. Nationality and prior residence can affect the correct route.

Use the official eligibility check before preparing documents. The result is guidance, and final eligibility is determined under Taiwan's rules and NTU's review.

Application process

A responsible application sequence is:

  1. Confirm your applicant category.
  2. Choose the exact department and entry term.
  3. Read the current quota and requirement page.
  4. Prepare only the documents that the program requests.
  5. Submit through NTU's official online system by the stated deadline.
  6. Monitor the application portal and email for requests or results.
  7. After admission, follow the official enrollment, housing, insurance, and immigration instructions.

Transcripts, recommendations, language evidence, statements, portfolios, research proposals, interviews, and fees vary by program. Do not rely on a generic checklist or a previous year's dates.

Tuition and budgeting

NTU's Office of International Affairs publishes approximate tuition by degree level and college in New Taiwan Dollars. The current page lists many undergraduate college rates from roughly NT$50,460 to NT$62,100 per semester, with higher rates for some professional programs. Graduate charging structures and special programs vary.

Use the official tuition and fees page for your level and college. USD conversions on university pages are estimates and can age quickly.

A complete budget should also include housing, utilities, food, transport, health coverage, books, residence documents, flights, deposits, and emergency funds. On-campus accommodation is not guaranteed for every student or every period, so check the current housing notice before assuming a dorm place.

Scholarships

NTU and external bodies offer scholarships, but eligibility, timing, competition, and benefits differ. An applicant may be able to apply for certain scholarships through the same system, while other awards use separate procedures.

Do not assume a ranking, admission offer, or international status guarantees funding. Read the current scholarship conditions and build a budget that remains workable if you do not receive an award.

Mandarin study at NTU

NTU offers Chinese-language learning options, including the International Chinese Language Program. The well-known Mandarin Training Center, abbreviated MTC, belongs to National Taiwan Normal University, which is a different institution.

Check whether a language course is degree-bearing, non-degree, intensive, seasonal, or available only to enrolled students. The course format affects tuition, schedule, and immigration planning.

Campus and Taipei

The main campus is in Taipei's Da'an District near Gongguan. NTU's international office describes a large academic offering, international partnerships, student organizations, and access to city transport.

Daily expenses vary by housing and lifestyle. Avoid relying on a single cafeteria meal price, used-bike price, or rent estimate as a lasting fact. Use current campus and local listings, then add a contingency to your budget.

Current Asia Pathway context

Asia Pathway does not currently list a direct NTU degree program and cannot submit or guarantee an NTU admission or scholarship. Our online 120-Hour Premier TEFL Course for Taiwan is a separate teacher-training option, not an NTU pathway.

Read the Taiwan study guide or contact Asia Pathway to compare currently listed options. Apply to NTU through the university's official channels.
